History of Web Accessibility and Information Technology at MSU

Michigan State University has a rich history of both web and information technology accessibility. Many of the accomplishments in these areas are listed below:

1984 Kurzweil Reading Machine is available to the MSU community
1987 Accessible workstations are available in Computer Labs
1990 Accessible workstations are available in the Union & RCPD Labs
1994 Accessibility is integrated into msu.edu and executive-level websites by the Digital Information Group
1998 ZoomText is available in Computer Labs
1999 Jaws is available in Computer Labs
2001 MSU has representation on the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative
2001 Web Accessibility website is launched
2001 LCTTP begins to offer classes on Web Accessibility
2002 Research and discussion of existing external policies and guidelines by Assistive Technology Advisory Committee (formed in 1982) with a focus on Web Accessibility
2002 MSU Statement of Encouragement is released
2002 Duxbury Braille embosser is available
2003 BookShared secured books database is available online
2003 MSU Web Team is formed
2003 Web Style Guide is implemented
2003 LIFT and creation of LIFT Development Profiles
2003 LCTTP Classes integrate Web Accessibility across the curriculum
2004 The Usability and Accessbility Center and the UAC Lab opened concurrent with the first Conference
2005 K-3000 is available in Computer Labs
2005 Accessibility is integrated into LC&T websites (W3C Level II)
2005 MSU collaborates in the release of the redesigned W3C Web Accessibility Initiative website
2005 Redesigned Web Accessibility website is released
2005 Web Site Accessibility Guidelines in plain language are released
2005 Downloadable Accessible Templates are released
2006 Web Accessibility Working Group and Advisory Group are formed to begin crafting a Web Accessibility policy
2006 MSU Starter Kit includes templates that are accessible and in compliance with both Section 508 and WCAG I Level
2006-2009 MSU spearheads work to include Web Accessibility in the development of the community source Kuali Financial System
2007 Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives becomes the Web Accessibility Policy steward in collaboration with the Office of the Vice Provost for Libraries, Computing & Technology as technical support
2007-2008 Purchase of SAP Human Resource for campus use includes accessibility for end users
2008 Web Accessibility Policy Awareness and Communication Team and the Policy Implementation Resource Team formed to assist in the roll-out of the MSU Web Accessibility Policy
2008 MSU Web Accessibility Policy released
2008 Web Accessibility website is redesigned and amended to support the newly released MSU Web Accessibility Policy
2008-2009 Further development of SAP HR system administration site will include accessibility
