Web Accessibility Review Flowchart

This article describes the steps that MSU Webmasters and content providers should take in order to assess if a Web site or document complies with the university’s policy on Web Accessibility. For official MSU Web sites you will follow the steps in this article and complete the Web Accessibility Review Form, or WARF. The form has four parts, labeled A through D. You will fill out the appropriate parts of the WARF to communicate to I3 your site’s compliance, or your plans to achieve compliance. The information in this document is also available as a graphical flowchart.

Start.

Question 1: Is the Web site or document part of core University content?

Yes: Proceed to Question 2.

No: Fill out WARF part B stating you do not consider the site to be core content. Submit WARF to I3. Proceed to Question 6.

Question 2: Is this a new site?

Step 1: Build in accessibility as you create the site. Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Assess the site’s accessibility. Proceed to Question 3.

Question 3: Is the site compliant with MSU’s policy on Web Accessibility?

Yes: Fill out WARF part A stating the site or document complies. Submit WARF to I3. Stop.

No: Proceed to Question 4.

Question 4: Is remediation feasible?

Yes: Proceed to Question 5.

No: Fill out WARF part Cexplaining why remediation is not feasible and asking for an exception. (Reasons for exception include 1) Site uses vendor software that is not accessible; 2) remediation is cost-prohibitive; remediation is too complex to be feasible; needed technology is not available.) Submit WARF to I3. Proceed to Question 7.

Question 5: Will the site comply by May 15, 2009?

Yes: Proceed to Step 3.

No: Fill out WARF part D, stating your general plans for remediation and on what date your site will comply. Submit WARF to I3. Proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Develop detailed remediation plan. Proceed to Step 4.

Step 4: Execute remediation plan. Proceed to Step 2.

Question 6: Does I3 approve your WARF Part B request?

Yes: Stop.

No: Proceed to Question 2.

Question 7: Does I3 approve your WARF Part C request?

Yes: Stop.

No: Proceed to Question 5.
