When a MediaSpace user has a large amount of uncaptioned videos, bulk ordering machine captions is an efficient way to caption the videos and improve their accessibility.
Instructions
- Go to the MSU MediaSpace homepage (mediaspace.msu.edu).
- Select "Guest" from the top right, then select "Login."
- If prompted, login with your MSU credentials.
- Once logged in, select "My Media" from the menu.
- Before proceeding, note that MediaSpace initially shows up to the first 16 items on this page. If there are more than 16 items, navigate to the end of the page and select "Load More." Keep loading more until you reach a notification that "there are no more media items."
- Select the "Filters" button at the top of the page to open the filters pane.
- Select the following filters to filter only for videos that you own that do not have captions:
- Media Type: Video
- Publish Status: All Statuses
- Scheduling: All Availabilities
- Ownership: Media I Own
- Captions: Not Available
- Duration: Any Duration
- With all videos loaded and filters selected, select the first check box before the list of videos to select all.
- Select the "Actions" button, and select "Caption & Enrich" from its menu.
- This will open the Order Captions & Enrichment Services screen. Note that this screen also confirms the number of media items selected. From the menu, confirm that "Service" is set to "Machine," "Source Media Language" is set to "English," and "Feature" is set to "Captions."
- Select the "Submit" button to order the captions.
Sample email language is available for those who would like to share bulk captioning instructions within their unit.
Considerations
- When this method is used, the media owner will receive an email notification for every video in the caption order. The emails will come from "Kaltura Automated Response."
- Machine captions can be ordered in over twenty languages, making it possible to bulk order captions for videos not in English. All videos in one bulk caption order would need to be in the same language.
- Errors do sometimes occur when using this method to order captions. The error message may not specify which media item resulted in the error.
