Archived Websites Exception

Requirements to Archive a Website

To qualify as an archived website, a site must meet all the following criteria:

  1. The website must have been created prior to April 24, 2026;
  2. The website is being kept only for reference, research, or recordkeeping purposes;
  3. The website is clearly labeled as archived;
    • This should be a prominent message on every web page.
    • If a message cannot be added to every page, it should be added to the home page.
  4. The website has not been updated, edited, or otherwise changed since it was archived.

Example Archive Labels

  • “This website has been archived and is no longer being updated. To request an accessible copy, please contact [email/phone number]”
  • “This is an archived website that is no longer updated”

Exceptions to the Archived Websites Rule

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the University is required to provide a person with a disability with the content in an accessible format when requested.

Example: If an individual with a hearing disability requests access to an archived university video, the university would have to provide that individual with a captioned version of the video.
