Requirements to Archive a Website
To qualify as an archived website, a site must meet all the following criteria:
- The website must have been created prior to April 24, 2026;
- The website is being kept only for reference, research, or recordkeeping purposes;
- The website is clearly labeled as archived;
- This should be a prominent message on every web page.
- If a message cannot be added to every page, it should be added to the home page.
- The website has not been updated, edited, or otherwise changed since it was archived.
Example Archive Labels
- “This website has been archived and is no longer being updated. To request an accessible copy, please contact [email/phone number]”
- “This is an archived website that is no longer updated”
Exceptions to the Archived Websites Rule
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the University is required to provide a person with a disability with the content in an accessible format when requested.
Example: If an individual with a hearing disability requests access to an archived university video, the university would have to provide that individual with a captioned version of the video.
